PBBM in Tokyo: Special Year-End Celebration with ASEAN+Japan Leaders

PBBM is in Tokyo now together with his wife and some Philippine government officials to attend the special year-end celebration with the ASEAN and Japanese leaders.  They were invited by the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida.  All the Asian leaders are gearing up for the 50th ASEAN+Japan Friendship Anniversary. 

The following is the schedule of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr:

December 16:   Bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister 

December 17:  50th Anniversary ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit

  • discussions on numerous international developments that involve the regional bloc, such as issues on the South China Sea, East China Sea, North Korea, and Myanmar
  • working lunch to discuss people-to-people activities related to arts, culture, and sports
  • summit-level discussion on ASEAN-Japan economic ties, particularly on trade and investment, supply chain, connectivity and infrastructure, climate change; and food and energy security.

December 18:  Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and Imperial Family Visit

The relationship between ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and Japan is characterized by strong economic, political, and cultural ties. Here are some key aspects of their relationship:


1.   Economic Cooperation: Japan is one of ASEAN’s major trading partners and investors. The two sides have engaged in various economic partnerships, including the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP), which aims to enhance trade and investment flows.


2.  Political and Security Dialogue: Japan and ASEAN engage in regular dialogues on political and security issues. This includes cooperation on regional security challenges, disaster management, and counter-terrorism efforts.


3.  Cultural Exchange: There are numerous cultural exchange programs between Japan and ASEAN countries, promoting mutual understanding and people-to-people connections.


4.   Development Assistance: Japan provides significant development assistance to ASEAN countries, focusing on infrastructure, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development initiatives.

What is AZEC?


The Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) is an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable development and addressing climate change across Asian countries. Launched in 2021, AZEC focuses on the following key objectives:


1.  Decarbonization: The initiative aims to facilitate the transition to low-carbon and sustainable energy systems in Asia, promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.


2.   Collaboration: AZEC encourages collaboration among Asian nations, fostering partnerships in technology, finance, and policy to achieve shared climate goals.


3.   Technology Sharing: The initiative promotes the sharing of innovative technologies and best practices for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure.


4.   Capacity Building: AZEC supports capacity-building efforts to help countries develop the necessary skills and frameworks to implement effective climate policies.


5.   Long-term Vision: The community seeks to establish a long-term vision for achieving net-zero emissions in the region, aligning with global climate agreements such as the Paris Agreement.


6.   Inclusivity: AZEC emphasizes the importance of including various stakeholders, including governments, private sectors, and civil society, in the transition to a sustainable future.
