Filipina in Tokyo: Active Representation of Global Filipino Diaspora

As a Filipina living alone in the fast-paced and expensive Tokyo, I reflect on my role within the Global Filipino Diaspora. After 14 years in Tachikawa City and 18 years in the Kanto area, I’ve witnessed our community’s evolution and the challenges we face. The Filipino diaspora encompasses those who have migrated from the Philippines and their descendants, driven by economic opportunities, education, and family reunification. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) significantly contribute to the Philippine economy through remittances, yet many endure discrimination and legal issues. In Japan, Filipinos seek better job prospects, enriching the multicultural landscape while fostering cultural exchange and strengthening ties between our nations.

Cultural Reflections: Philippine “Undas” as Compared to the Japanese Practices

In the vibrant cultural landscapes of the Philippines and Japan, the traditions of honoring the departed take center stage through "Undas" and the Obon festival. While both celebrations focus on remembering loved ones, they showcase distinct customs and practices that reflect their unique cultural values. Undas, celebrated in early November, brings families together in lively cemeteries, blending solemn remembrance with festive gatherings. In contrast, Japan's Obon, observed in mid-August, emphasizes spiritual reflection and ancestral connection through rituals and serene gatherings. This article explores the rich similarities and differences between these two meaningful traditions, highlighting how they foster community and honor the legacies of those who have passed.
