Training young Japanese as confident English reporters: A Great Challenge!

Tokyo Cram School

Shy and indifferent to the English language & culture, but here comes a Tokyo cram school established in 2014 that trains Japanese junior reporters.  At the start, it is a great challenge as a Filipina teacher-school owner but finds it a functional curriculum that helps the students enjoy the training.  It’s a step-by-step program from learning pronunciation and reading using the Jolly Phonics Curriculum and then the English Time book series by Oxford publication. Videos of the schoolchildren are sent to the parents.   What a wonderful surprise for them to see their children reporting in English!  They are happy to let them continue their studies…Some from preschool to university — more than 12 years at the Olives English School

Elective
Eiken (English Language Proficiency Test), TOEIC & TOEFL are included in the curriculum plus thematic events throughout the year for the whole school.

The special school events like Valentine’s Day, Easter,  Halloween, Christmas, Summer, Winter & Spring English Programs are the many chances for speaking English, cultural exposure, and social interaction.

Welcome to the Japanese Kids’ Public Speaking Development Program at Olives English School in Tachikawa City, Tokyo! Our cram school’s curriculum includes a training program for young students to speak in public.

We have a quarterly English Report Time where the students write their reports with their original illustrations and then present them to the class. This is a unique English program on Speaking, Reading & Writing Development plus Question & Answer (Q & A) to enhance the students’ Listening & Reasoning abilities.  Check the scram school’s website here: Olives English School

Here are the key points on the importance of training young Japanese kids to speak English and in public:

*

1. Improved Communication Skills: Learning English from a young age helps Japanese children develop strong communication skills. This prepares them to interact effectively with people from diverse linguistic backgrounds, both within Japan and globally.

2. Increased Opportunities: Proficiency in English opens up a world of opportunities for young Japanese individuals. It can enhance their academic, professional, and personal prospects, whether they choose to pursue higher education, careers, or international travel and interactions.

3. Cultural Understanding: Exposure to the English language and Western cultures through language training can foster a greater understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. This can contribute to more informed and tolerant global citizens.

4. Cognitive Benefits: Studies have shown that learning multiple languages at a young age can improve cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and mental flexibility. These skills are valuable for a child’s overall development.

5. Confidence Building: Practicing public speaking and communication in English can help Japanese children build confidence and self-esteem. This can positively impact their social interactions and academic performance.

6. Competitive Advantage: In today’s globalized world, proficiency in English is often seen as a valuable asset for Japanese individuals, giving them a competitive edge in various fields, such as business, academia, and international relations.
