Teaching online for 20+ years in Japan! Remember the pre-Zoom, pre-StreamYard and even pre-Facebook days when you taught online? What medium did you use?
For some years, I used Skype when I taught business lessons. Since Japan started to hire foreign workers and the most important qualification is to pass the Japan Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 4 (at least!) for Specified Skilled Workers (SSW), I launched an online Japanese school in 2019. I even partnered with an institution teaching Asians the Japanese Language & Culture. Many people, especially back home in the Philippines, cannot understand then this system of teaching. My hired professional & licensed Japanese teachers and a Filipino who passed Level 1 were even excited to start this new program…Then the Covid-19 pandemic came and everyone went online for lessons, business transactions, shopping, etc.
Olives English School, my cram school in Tokyo, has been using online teaching before the pandemic came so it was an easy adjustment for me. In 2020, I also created 2 online courses based on my years of experiences as a teacher in Japan: Online Teaching Course and Online School Management Course. In the same year, I partner with London Teacher Training College and Triplemerge LLC to offer TESOL/TEFL Certification Course for Teachers in Japan and beyond. We went borderless and the world is our classroom!
Great to see our teachers already employed as online and onsite teachers, too.
Last Saturday, January 6, my students (Mom & Child Class) suddenly decided to study online. I even have a class before their scheduled onsite lesson. Well, we still used our textbooks and with the remaining time, my students and I started to use Word Artwork. Glad that the students enjoyed so much our lesson with the new online creative language learning activity. You can also use it in your online classes.
